In Memoriam

We are the Pilgrims, master; we shall go
Always a little further: it may be
Beyond the last blue mountain barred with snow,
Across that angry or that glimmering sea,
White on a throne or guarded in a cave
There lives a prophet who can understand
Why men were born: but surely we are brave,
Who make the Golden Journey to Samarkand.

Above: Verses from "The Golden Journey to Samarkand" by James Elroy Flecker
have for many years been an inspiration to members of the SAS.

The prayer collect of the Special Air Service Regiment
Oh Lord, Who didst call on Thy disciples to venture all to win all men to
Thee, grant that we, the chosen members of the Special Air Service Regiment,
may by our works and our ways dare all to win all and, in so doing, render
special service to Thee and our fellow men in all the world, through the
same Jesus Christ Our Lord, Amen.

Pete is a survivor - in SAS parlance "he beat the clock" - but many of his friends paid the
ultimate sacrifice and did not make it home. Please take a moment to pay your respects.
We will remember them.

 MIKE DAKIN sas

NOVEMBER 2016 MICK DAKIN , A FRIEND AND COLLEAGUE PUBLISHED HIS MEMOIRS ENTITLED--SAS
A STORM GATHERING--HE WAS FULL OF OPTIMISM FOR THE FUTURE.

SADLY, I NOW HAVE TO ANNOUNCE THAT MICK PASSED AWAY ON 5th JANUARY 2017.

I SERVED WITH MICK FOR 5 YEARS DURING THE SECRET WAR IN DHOFAR AND SURVEILLANCE WORK
IN NORTHERN IRELAND. MIKE WAS A PROFESSIONAL AND SKILLED ARTILLERY MAN, HE WAS ONE
OF THE FINEST 81mm MORTAR MAN OF HIS GENERATION.

SO I SAY FAREWELL TO ANOTHER 'B' SQUADRON STALWART. R.I.P MICK

 PETE SCHOLEY SAS

ON NOVEMBER 28 2016, IT WAS WITH HEAVY HEART I HELPED CARRY THE
COFFIN OF A TRUE SAS LEGEND.

PETE SCHOLEY-THE JOKER- PASSED AWAY ON NOVEMBER 17th 2016.

PETE'S FUNERAL WAS HELD AT THE HEREFORD CREMATORIUM, IT WAS STANDING ROOM ONLY, I WAS IMPRESSED BY THE SHEER NUMBER OF SAS VETERANS WHO HAD TRAVELLED FAR AND WIDE TO ATTEND THE FUNERAL, EVEN THE LAST LIVING MEMBER OF 'L'DETACHMENT, ONE OF THE ORIGINALS WHO FORMED THE SAS WAS THEIR! LOFTY WISEMAN DID THE EULOGY. IT JUST SHOWS THE LEVEL OF AFFECTION AND RESPECT MEMBERS OF THE SAS HAD FOR PETE.

I SHALL NEVER FORGET HIS GREAT SENSE OF HUMOUR WHICH COULD RAISE THE SPIRITS IN THE MOST DANGEROUS OF SITUATIONS. IN THE OMAN IN 1971 DURING THE FIRST PHASE OF OPERATION JAGUAR, WE WERE TRAPPED IN THE BOTTOM OF A STEEP SIDED WADI JUST AS THE SUN CAME UP AND THERES PETE WALKING UP AND DOWN THE COLUMN, DOING HIS PERFECT IMPERSONATION OF JOHN WAYNE,HE HAD THE WALK,HE HAD THE TALK, AND WITH AN AMAZING IMITATION OF WAYNES VOICE HE WAS SHOUTING "WE SHOULD BE ON THE HIGH GROUND,WE SHOULD BE ON THE HIGH GROUND" THE ARAB SOLDIERS COULDN'T BELIEVE THEIR EYES! TO THE MEMBERS OF THE SAS IT WAS PURE PETE.

PETE WAS NOT ONLY A COMEDIAN, HE WAS A MAN OF GREAT INNER RESOURCES HAVING PASSED 'P' COMPANY THE SELECTION FOR THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT AT AN EARLIER AGE. A MAN OF INTEGRITY,HE WOULD DO ANYTHING FOR A GOOD CAUSE.

AND SO IT IS WITH GREAT SADNESS I SAY FAREWELL TO MY FRIEND PETE. R.I.P

It is with heavy heart that we announce the death of Pete's friend and comrade John McAleese MM, yesterday 26 August 2011. A message from Pete:

I SERVED WITH JOHN FOR MANY YEARS IN "B" SQUADRON WHICH INCLUDED THE IRANIAN EMBASSY SIEGE. HE WAS A BRAVE, COURAGEOUS SOLDIER WHO WON THE MILITARY MEDAL FOR AN OPERATION IN NORTHERN IRELAND. HE WAS A VERY PROFESSIONAL SPECIAL FORCES SOLDIER AND WILL BE SADLY MISSED. RIP JOHN.

A message from Pete:

FRED A GREAT FIJIAN WARRIOR, ONE OF THE FIJIAN BROTHERHOOD IN 'B' SQN WHICH ALSO INCLUDED TAK, LABA, JIM, AND TOM, ALL DECORATED FOR BRAVERY.

WHEN I WAS A YOUNG TROOPER JUST OFF SELECTION AND I JOINED 'B' SQN, FRED WAS A VETERAN OF MANY CAMPAIGNS, AND FOR SOMEONE LIKE ME WHO HAD NEVER BEEN IN COMBAT, FRED WAS AN INSPIRATION, HE GAVE ME CONFIDENCE ON MY FIRST OPERATIONAL TOUR OF DUTY IN THE DHOFAR WAR. I ALWAYS FELT SAFE WHEN FRED WAS AROUND. FAREWELL FRED, I HOPE YOU FIND VALHALLA.

Hereford Cathedral

A major new internationally important artwork, dedicated to the Special Air Service and funded through donations by
the Special Air Service Regimental Association is now installed in Hereford Cathedral. In the form of a magnificent
sculpture and stained glass window, it was completed in April 2017. The SAS, now in its 75th year, maintains a long
and close association with Hereford Cathedral, the City and County.
